We Have All Missed The Mark!
Text: Romans 3:23
We get our text this morning from Vs. 23… “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”
We have all sinned. The word sin, the word ἥμαρτον means to miss the mark. The mark this morning is not some…
- Sports figure
- Political figure
- Family member
- or something we are striving for.
The mark is not determined by…
- What we have done
- What we are going to do
- Your good deeds
- or Financial contributions
The mark here in the bible is defined for all of us in this one passage…
We have all failed, we have all come short of God.
We have all missed the mark because the mark is God and His perfection.
Let me try to illustrate it with this Wheel of Fortune clip…
This gentleman had the answer and it was right before him but he missed the mark and because of that he could not receive the prize.
In life, only those who realize and understand what the mark is will make it past go, but I feel that many…
- Will not pass go
- Will not collect $200.00.
They won’t because they have decided to make up their own rules and their own words to get them to the prize.
The writer of Romans as well as the author of Romans will take the first 3 chapters to reveal to you that you have missed the mark.
Romans 1:28 &32 expresses such thoughts… “They did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient…” Vs. 28 “Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” Vs. 32
The problem in today’s society is not that we don’t know what the mark is we must reach for but we don’t want to acknowledge the mark we are to strive for anymore.
If you cannot acknowledge what the mark is and you desire to live in your hope that you are good enough to get yourself the Heaven, then at the end of life you will die and you will go to hell.
Max Lucado wrote this about that Mark…
Sin is not a regrettable lapse or an occasional stumble.
Sin stages a coup against God’s regime.
Sin storms the castle
lays claim to God’s throne,
and defies his authority.
Sin shouts, “I want to run my own life, thank you very much!”
Sin tells God to…
- get out
- get lost
- and not come back.
Sin is insurrection of the highest order and you are an insurrectionist.
So am I.
So is every single person who has taken breath!
By the time you get to Romans 3:23 you find out that you have all fallen short of the mark because the mark is God… and because you have fallen short there is a payment that needs to be payed… Romans 6:23 tells you that the wages of sin is death…
There is a payment that needs to be made. A debt that has to be settled between you and God! Your…
- Good works
- Religious ways
- Outward actions will not work…
They are all null and void because it is God who set the mark.
So what do you have to do to meet the mark that you have fallen short of?
Can I share with you what you have to do this morning…
I. You Must Believe In The Right Way… Not Your Way! Romans 4:1-8
Oh, how we desire to justify our way…
- into the spiritual
- into heaven…
through our actions instead of our belief… Romans 4:2-4
Abraham was not justified by his works according to Vs. 2. All that he did in this life, it was to give him the glory in this life, but for him to reach the depths of where God is in heaven he had to do it by his faith. Vs. 3
To illustrate this the Apostle Paul uses King David and shows us that God gives us righteousness not because of our good deeds but because of our faith in Him…
The problem in our rational mind is that we live in a world filled with debt and we understand that payment has to be made for the debt. If payment has to be made then how can God accept only a payment of belief?
God wants you to realize and understand that when it is all said and done you will stand before Him and boast in the fact that you did nothing but believe and God did everything so you could have a relationship with Him.
To be justified in God’s eyes, in the end you cannot say… “Look what I did to get myself here.” but, “Look at what God did to get me here!” Romans 4:16a; 2–25
So God set a plan in motion to pay the debt of sin. Believe in His plan, better yet His son Jesus Christ is the way God would establish for our justification.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
Because we can never obtain to God and because God set it in motion we have to set aside our way and be…

II. Justified In The Right Way… Not Your Way! Romans 5:1-12
So being justified by faith, you now stand in that faith and begin to see God through faith. Vs. 1&2
It is now you understand the Love of God because it is shed abroad in our heart and it is now you begin to to understand who God is in your life. Vs. 3-5
you now realize that God is a God who loves you and desires reconciliation to you and that God has done His part by making away back to Him but your part is coming to Him. Vs. 8-12
The problem lies for most people in our text… You remember our text don’t you, Vs. 23… “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”
The problem is you don’t feel you are a sinner when God in His word tells you that you are. There is the conflict between you and God.
This morning if you’re here and you’re an enemy of God, I want to help you resolve that problem. God can’t do anymore… Now He is waiting on you.
That brings me to…
Point # 2
III. Justification By God Comes By Calling On God! Romans 10:9-13
The responsibility of God is now past. He has given the responsibility back to you and you now have to make a decision to be made right… To be justified!
God does not care about your…
- What you have done
God now cares about you accepting Him and being made right by His way. Vs. 12
God desires not only to make all things right, but He desires to forgive you… Why?
Let us this morning collude and sum up what has been said here this morning.
You Stand in Need of Forgiveness.
You are guilty; without plea; without the means of reparation or satisfaction. This is true of all men. “All have sinned,” etc. All are condemned; and without forgiveness, all must perish.
God Only Can Forgive.
God Provides for the Forgiveness of Sin.
God Has Revealed the Only Way of Forgiveness.
God Desires and Is Ever Ready to Forgive.
There Is Forgiveness with God Now.
Will you call upon Him today and be saved?
