The Hedge About Us!
Text: Job 1:7-10
This morning I realize and most likely you do to that we as Christians have not an enemy, but we have enemies…
The enemies we face are…
- The flesh … Expound upon… Romans 7:12-24 (For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Vs. 18)
- The world… Expound upon… Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1Corinthians_2:12
- THEN THERE IS SATAN!
This morning I desire to give to you a few brief thoughts on our enemy, Satan.
- Old Horn Head himself
Jesus told Peter in Luke 22:31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat…”
The same way Jesus described him in Luke 22:31, In our text this morning Satan comes on the scene with intent to do a believer harm, but he knows that God has built a hedge of protection around each one of us.
This morning if you are trying to follow God with all your heart and you keep going through things can I lay at your feet the reason’s… YES REASON’S!
1. The flesh… It keeps us from doing what we know we need to do.
2. The World… We are drawn to it like a moth to the fire. It is so pretty and feels so good but if we are not carful it will do us much harm and even can kill us both spiritually and physically.
3. Then there is Satan and his ability to enter into the hedge of protection that is about us.
I want you to realize this morning that if you are a believer then God has a hedge about you that Satan can only penetrate at the will of the Father.
This one call Satan is ever walking to and fro the Bible says, looking for…
- that Saint
- that Christian
- that Believer he can attack.
Satan is ever vigilant and the Bible tells you and I that he is ever looking for the saint he can attack.
Look at Vs. 7… “And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” Job 1:7
This morning it will be my duty to introduce you to that enemy, AS I HAVE MANY TIMES BEFORE. So this morning I want to show you first of all…
I. The Predator! 1st. Peter 5:8
He is known as Satan, which means… Adversary!
The Tempter 1st Thess. 3:5
The Wicked one Matthew 13:19
Accuser of the Brethren Rev. 12:10
Angel of Light 2nd Cor. 11:14
Ruler of the World John 12:31
God of this Age 2nd Cor. 4:4
The Prince of the Power of the Air E 2:2
Jesus called him a thief and a liar in John 10.
It has been said and revealed, especially to us that are believers, from the Bible that man is at the top of the food chain with no natural enemies.
But I can tell you this morning that he does have a supernatural one.
HE lurks around looking for ways to accuse those that are saved and is the culmination of all predators seeking but one thing… MAN.
Satan is the apex predator on earth, a man hunter at the top of the food chain. In him resides the most corrupt, grim, and horrific evil. It can be said with all truthfulness that, all evil is sourced in him and traced back to him.
If as believers we are not careful, then we will fall and run into his trap… His web of lies.
His objective is destruction with an unquenching thirst for cruelty, H will stop at nothing to get it. He detects low self esteem and emotional problems from miles away like a shark detects blood in the water.
He loves senseless bloodshed. He’ll take a casualty any way he can get it. and puts a scope on the weakest in the herd as well as the leader. He loves a pile on no matter how unfair the advantage and if he sees the victim waving a white flag and asking for terms of surrender his cruelty and deception is increased. For him there is no mercy.
Always pursuing his victims…
This brings me to point # 2…
II. The Pursuit!
In his pursuit of the Christian we must know and learn that he is always subtle… Genesis tells us that as he used the serpent to plunge all of mankind into sin.
Satan often inspires the sensationalized tragedy, the triple homicide, the suicide bombing, and the fatal accident. But he is also the author of the little sins seen every day. One person put it this way…
If he can’t paralyze his victim with outright intimidation, he’ll use deception and guile with equal dexterity depending on the personality and situation. Like any predator Satan prefers to spend the least amount of energy in capturing a victim, slipping into the shadows and operating undetected. The experience of people 90% of the time with Satan is not the demonstrative, sensational, shock value encounters as seen in Ghost Stories, the Exorcist, or the Omen but in the subtle compromise and grooved pathways of bad habit, all in view of the big fall. His objective is to produce a vague cloud of half-conscious guilt over a life wasted in trifles and distractions. Scott Chandler
Many think if they obey Satan, he’ll stay off their backs, just find the right direction to rub the fur. But he always bites his own as the ultimate traitor.
He is a…
- control freak
- and master of the cheap shot
- and sucker punch.
May I remind you that Satan does all this by working in the mind while God works exclusively in the heart. Unless we fill our mind with that which is good then the mind is definitely the ‘the devils workshop’.
Satan pursues us by lies and blinding us to the truth.
Satan pursues us by putting evil suggestions into our minds.
Satan pursues us by promoting an unforgiving spirit among brethren.
Satan pursues us by tempting believers to commit sexual immorality.
Satan pursues us by any means he can.
- He Pursued Eve in the Garden!
- He pursued David upon the throne in 1st Chronicles 21!
- He pursued Joshua the High Priest in Zechariah 3!
- He pursued Peter in Luke 22!
My friend if you think you’re any different. Today he is just as much a pursuer as he was in the times mentioned above, and he pursues you.
This is the reason Paul told us to in Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Oh, but this morning there is good news and I presented to you the 2 facts to give you the one that is faithful…
We have a predator…
This predator will pursue you…
But here is the good news…
III. The Promise! Lev. 26:1-12
I love promises when people I know give me a promise and I know that I can depend on them not to break that promise…
Brother and sisters in Christ that I tell something and they promise to keep it confidential…
Or, those who tell me they are going to do something for me and they do!
Today, I want you know that the Bible tells you and I that this is friend in our life that sticks closer than a brother. “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Proverbs_18:24
We have promise that He will never leave us, He will never forsake us…
That he will be with us in the fire, and that He hedges us about as He did Job, but what about us? Oh the promises of God are so real, but as I read through Leviticus this last week and finally made it to chapter 26 I find another promise for those who obey and those who do not.
In Vs. 1-12 He promises to hedge us about, both corporately and individually if we would follow Him but then gives a solemn warning in Vs. 13-33
He established the same promise in 2nd Chronicles 5-7 as Solomon prayed, God said “If my people which are called by my name.”
The problem I see is that the promise is not being fulfilled because God’s people are walking contrary to God in their own…
- And sinful ways…
We are too busy with life.
God’s promises have not changed…
The rules have not changed…
He is the same from eternity past until now.
The Lord only ask one thing… “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. Luke_9:23
We have a predator…
He is pursuing you…
But we have a promise. Read it one more time with me… “
Job 1:9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
Job 1:10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Satan knows to whom you belong, but know that he is pursuing you and sometime he gets a little bit of us because we will not follow and even sometimes because we are following but understand that if you belong to the Lord then Satan does nothing that God does not allow.
This morning where are you at. I want you to look at your life and determine by self examination that you are exactly where God desires you to be. If you’re not isn’t it time you get that settled
