Mind The Gaps
Text: Ezekiel 23:29-31
The railway system in London commonly known as the tubes as been in operation for 153 years but in the early to mid sixties the London train system was having increasingly dramatic problem. The problem was that there was a big gap between the platform and the train that was on the track and on occasion people would miss the gap fall in between the platform and the train and be seriously injured.
With this increasing problem the city set out to do something about it… The had a campaign and come up with a solution. The solution was to remind people of the gap. They did this by painting a small 3 word phrase on the platform and a recording would repeat what was painted on the platform. (Show Video)
The phrase would save the lives of many as it became a constant reminder of the gap.
This morning I realize and most likely you do to that we as Christians have gaps in our lives. In Ezekiel it is God who cries out for somebody to fill the gap because he knew that there would be those who would do that which is right in their own eyes.
That truth would no longer be absolute but relative and subjective from person to person. There would be no authority to which people would come to and cling to as an absolute in their lives.
In the days of the judges it is written that the people did what they wanted to… “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” Judges 17:6; 21:25
In Ezekiel’s day God was looking for those who would fill the gap…
The gap between right and wrong
The gap between righteousness and wickedness
The gap between life and death
In Ezekiel 13:1-6 the prophet cried for God and spoke against the religious leaders of the day… Listen to the Word of God…
“And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing! O Israel, thy prophets are like the foxes in the deserts. Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD. They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, The LORD saith: and the LORD hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word.” Ezekiel 13:1-6
This morning I want us to thinks about the gaps in our lives.
- Our lack of belief in a God who can.
- Our lack of faithfulness in a God who can.
These gaps are sometimes significant enough to keep us from doing anything for God and keeps us realizing the gaps in the world.
This morning I desire to share with you some gaps that God is looking to fill.
This morning there is… First…
I. A Gap Between Light and Darkness! Genesis 1:4
“And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. ”
Since the beginning of time God has separated the light from the darkness. There has always been that gap for us to distinguish the day from the night, so that we can know the difference.
The bible speaks of God being that light in 1 John 1:5 “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
The Bible goes on to say that this light came into the world and the darkness of man did not comprehend or acknowledge this light. John 1:5
Paul wrote in 2nd Corinthians 4:6 “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
There has always been a gap between light and darkness both in the physical sense and also in the spiritual sense and if we don’t mind gap we may slip and fall into the darkness.
God today is looking for men and women to fill the gap…
God today is looking for men and women from among His people (the Church) with convictions about Godly Doctrines, with compassion for sinners, and with courage to…
- Fight the good fight
- follow the Lord
- be a fisher of men
- and finish the race with clarity.
If we do not stand in the gap people will fall through and go to hell. Because today not only is there a difference between the light and the dark physically there is one there spiritually as well. The Bible speaks of us as people of the day.
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.1 Thessalonians 5:5
As I watch this world I am convinced that there is a gap between light and day…
there is also…
II. A Gap Between God and Man! Genesis 3:1-10
Since that time when the forbidden fruit was partaken of in the garden there as been an increasingly widening gap between man and their God. Satan’s strategy began rather innocently by introducing and encouraging doubt. That doubt has continued to grow to the point that the gap is now as wide as the grand canyon.
Man will do anything to get away from their God because they want to do all things on their own. We are a…
- Self seeking
- Self absorbed
- Self centered
- Self indulgent
- Self ish
We will build up our self while tearing down others. By one man sin entered into the world and by one man there was a gap place between the one who desired a relationship with his creation and his creation who now desire no relationship with his God.
I am afraid that the tension between the vertical and the horizontal as grown ever increasingly larger. While people all across this globe are looking for a horizontal answer, God desires a vertical answer.
The horizontal line shows the need for man to find his way to God, while the vertical shows the longing of God to find his way to man. The horizontal line underlies the inaccessibility of God. There is that gap between God and man that cannot be closed by man.
Because of that there will always be…
III. A Gap Between Heaven and Hell! Luke 16:19-31
That gap is there because we are busy about finding our way to a place we can never be righteous enough to obtain. We come up with our own ideas and philosophies that sound good because it is ours. Can I tell you we will never make it. The problem is that we won’t listen to the man of God.
Look at Vs. 31 of Luke 16 “And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”
The gap is a gap of our own doing. We choose to place that gap there and we choose live in that gap until death and the decision is made for us because we did not make a decision here.
To often we are content because we don’t or we refuse to think about those gaps in our life. If we don’t “mind the gaps” then one day it may be to late for you. We need to mind the gaps between…
- Light and Darkness
- Man and God
- Heaven and Hell
These gaps in our life are the gaps that if not careful will cause us to be enemies with God.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” Romans 5:8-10
But tell you this morning that we don’t have to have those gaps… Those gaps are there of our own making, but God has closed the gap between…
Light and Darkness
Man and God
Heaven and Hell
Let me give you my last point…
IV. Jesus Christ Came To Bridge That Gap. Hebrews 10:1; 9-19
Look at vs. 1 with me…
“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.”
This verse alone should sadden our heart. The law being a shadow will always leave the gaps that will keep us from God. We can never be perfected because we can never be good enough.
But oh, we have the answer to our problem in Vs. 9-19… Let us read it together. (Read verses)
- This man
- This one
- This sacrifice
Came to that we could be perfected… He bridged the gap. Who’s he? Jesus Christ! He came to bridge the gap between man and God. What we could not do He did.
The bible depicts us as sinners in the hands of an angry God. Isaiah said our righteousness was as filthy rags. The more you wipe your hands, the dirtier your hands become but God provided clean rags so our hands could be cleaned.
The Bible depicts us as sinners…
- Because all have sinned. Romans 3:23
- There is hope. Romans 5:8
- There is a way to bridge the gap. Romans 10:9-13
All we have to do is accept the one who can bridge the gap.
How do you do that?
- Realize you are a sinner.
- Realize that because you’re a sinner, there is a gap.
- Accept the fact that you cannot bridge the gap.
- Accept the fact that God sent His son Jesu Christ to bridge the gap.
- Accept Jesus Christ as the only sacrifice God will accept.
How can you do that? By asking Jesus Christ to come into your heart.
